Autodesk Maya, commonly shortened to just Maya (/ˈmaɪə/MY-ə[3][4]), is a 3D computer graphics application that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, originally developed by Alias Systems Corporation (formerly Alias|Wavefront) and currently owned and developed by Autodesk. It is used to create assets for interactive 3D applications (including video games), animated films, TV series, and visual effects.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Autodesk today has announced the release of Maya 2020, bringing animators, modelers, riggers, and technical artists a host of new tools and improvements that enable faster, more intuitive CG content creation from first concept to final delivery. Autodesk Maya LT 2020.3 Multilanguage Win x64 Autodesk has released an update to Maya LT 2019, the latest version of its cut-down edition of Maya for games artists. The update adds new sculpting features including support for topological symmetry and vector displacement map stamping, and iterates on recent updates to the UV Editor, Graph Editor and Time Editor.
History
Maya was originally an animation product based on code from The Advanced Visualizer by Wavefront Technologies, Thomson Digital Image (TDI) Explore, PowerAnimator by Alias Research, Inc., and Alias Sketch!. The IRIX-based projects were combined and animation features were added; the project codename was Maya.[5]Walt Disney Feature Animation collaborated closely with Maya's development during its production of Dinosaur.[6] Disney requested that the user interface of the application be customizable so that a personalized workflow could be created. This was a particular influence in the open architecture of Maya, and partly responsible for it becoming popular in the animation industry.
After Silicon Graphics Inc. acquired both Alias and Wavefront Technologies, Inc., Wavefront's technology (then under development) was merged into Maya. SGI's acquisition was a response to Microsoft Corporation acquiring Softimage 3D. The new wholly owned subsidiary was named 'AliasWavefront'.[7]
In the early days of development, Maya started with Tcl as the scripting language, in order to leverage its similarity to a Unix shell language. But after the merger with Wavefront, Sophia, the scripting language in Wavefront's Dynamation, was chosen as the basis of MEL (Maya embedded language).[8]
Maya 1.0 was released in February 1998. Following a series of acquisitions, Maya was bought by Autodesk in 2005.[9][10] Under the name of the new parent company, Maya was renamed Autodesk Maya. However, the name 'Maya' continues to be the dominant name used for the product.
Awards
On March 1, 2003, Alias was given an Academy Award for Technical Achievement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for scientific and technical achievement for their development of Maya software.[11]
In 2005, while working for Alias|Wavefront, Jos Stam shared an Academy Award for Technical Achievement with Edwin Catmull and Tony DeRose for their invention and application of subdivision surfaces.[12]
On February 8, 2008, Duncan Brinsmead, Jos Stam, Julia Pakalns and Martin Werner received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for the design and implementation of the Maya Fluid Effects system.[13][14]
Industry usage
The widespread use of Maya in the film industry is usually associated with its development on the film Dinosaur, released by Disney in 2000.[15] In 2003, when the company received an Academy Award for technical achievement, it was noted to be used in films such as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Spider-Man (2002), Ice Age, and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.[16] By 2015, VentureBeat Magazine stated that all ten films in consideration for the Best Visual Effects Academy Award had used Autodesk Maya and that it had been 'used on every winning film since 1997.'[17]
Overview
Maya is an application used to generate 3D assets for use in film, television, game development and architecture. The software was initially released for the IRIX operating system. However, this support was discontinued in August 2006 after the release of version 6.5. Maya was available in both 'Complete' and 'Unlimited' editions until August 2008, when it was turned into a single suite.[18]
Users define a virtual workspace (scene) to implement and edit media of a particular project. Scenes can be saved in a variety of formats, the default being .mb (Maya D). Maya exposes a node graph architecture. Scene elements are node-based, each node having its own attributes and customization. As a result, the visual representation of a scene is based entirely on a network of interconnecting nodes, depending on each other's information. For the convenience of viewing these networks, there is a dependency and a directed acyclic graph.

Autodesk Maya
Make it with Maya Computer Animation Software
Maya® 3D animation, modeling, simulation, and rendering software. It provides an integrated, powerful toolset. Use it for animation, environments, motion graphics, virtual reality, and character creation.
Merge BaseAnimation layer on import
A new Merge Base Animation Layers option has been added to the Import options to let you merge the base animation layer of an imported file with the base layer animation already in the scene. When importing many scenes with many imported assets, turn this option on.
To explain, the default setting is off and imported layers are moved under the current base layer.
Activate the new behavior by setting the file command flag mbl/mergeBaseAnimLayer to True.
Paint Skin Weights Tool improvements
The Paint Skin Weights tool is updated with the following improvements:
Autodesk Lt 2020 Download
- The Filter Influences field behaves the same as the Outliner Filters, making it easier to locate and select influences you want to work with, especially if you have a complex rig. Previously you had to add special characters to filter in the Paint Skin Weights Tool, unlike in the Outliner.
- If you have faces or edges selected on a skinned mesh when opening the Paint Skin Weights Tool, now automatically switch your selection to vertices. In other words, you begin painting weights immediately.
- Improved: Refresh of the Influences list after you perform various operations like Remove Unused Influences or Add Influences.
- Fixed: A small issue with the Expand Influence List button shifting to accommodate a vertical scroll bar.
HumanIK: Neck Motion Reduction setting
A new Neck Motion Reduction slider has been added to the Attribute Editor (HIKProperties > ge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/ENU/Maya-CharacterAnimation/files/GUID-EB2A8BB0-801E-4251-8C4C-09986049CCBB-htm.html'>Retarget Specific area). Similar to the Neck Motion Reduction Properties in MotionBuilder. This attribute lets you dampen the amount of movement transferred from the character body to the neck. Neck Motion Reduction is useful when the motion created from inadequate capture data. It works by averaging movement between the character’s neck and chest.
Export support for .hikc v1
A new environment variable (MAYA_WRITE_HIK_V1) allows Maya to export .hikc files from recent Maya versions while running the 2017 HIK runtime. See also General Variables.
Maya 2018 implemented an updated version of .hikc that included additional roll joints that were unavailable in the 2017 HIK runtime. This new environment variable is of note for anyone who uses the deprecated Autodesk Gameware HumanIK middleware to load hikc definition files.
New Graph Editor display option
A new Show Animated Shapes option in the Graph Editor List menu lets you set whether the Graph Editor displays all curves downstream from a node, or just the animation curve of the selected node. This is useful if you have custom rigs with specialized connections. Alternately, when animators only want to view the transforms for a selected object.
Improvements to the Script Editor
New options have been added to the Script Editor, making it easier to work with tabs.
Similar to the tabs in a web browser, you can right-click a tab in the Script Editor to access options to create, rename, or delete tabs. Updated Script Editor hotkeys are more intuitive, and you can now close a tab by middle-clicking or clicking X. They also moved the tab options from the Command menu to the Tabs menu.
Bifrost Extension for Maya 2.1.0.0
